US History Symbol Slam

Get ready to make teaching terms and concepts for US History exciting and engaging.

Symbol Slam is Caitlin's go to strategy for building historical knowledge and content mastery with the use of symbols, call-and-response, and brief notes for each term. 

This is a year-long teaching strategy covering only the most essential terms and concepts for US History (aligned with TEKS) with memorable symbols that make each term pop! My students draw the symbol and learn a short phrase for each symbol that they can recite each time they see it and take a few notes for each! Included in this resource are 72 symbols, the brief notes for each, and additional notes for the teacher with important details for each symbol. 

Incorporate these into your daily lessons (randomly or as a warm up following a bellwork) and it is a really effective and engaging way to build historical knowledge and content mastery. Also include highlighting and underlining to help your kids learn how to summarize and simplify, then gradually decreases that support until they can do it on their own!
